  • Houston Christian Alumna Sofie Jones Named 65th Masked Rider at Texas Tech University

Houston Christian High School proudly celebrates alumna Sofie Jones on being named the 65th Masked Rider at Texas Tech University, one of the university’s most prestigious and recognizable traditions.

The announcement was made during the annual Transfer of Reins ceremony held at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center, where Jones officially assumed the role following the tenure of the 64th Masked Rider, Rose Rosas. The Masked Rider tradition, established in 1954, symbolizes the grit, determination, and spirit of Texas Tech.

A Houston native, Jones began riding at just three years old, following in her mother’s footsteps. Over the years, she has developed extensive experience competing in barrel racing and other equestrian events. Her passion for horses played a significant role in her decision to attend Texas Tech, where she is currently pursuing a degree in animal science.

Jones is an active member of the campus community, participating in the Honors College and the Texas Tech Rodeo Team. Despite a demanding academic and extracurricular schedule, she credits her time with horses as a source of balance and motivation. “It doesn’t feel like work,” Jones shared. “Taking care of them has never really felt like work to me. I actually feel like it helps me with my drive for school.”

A third-generation Red Raider, Jones comes from a family deeply rooted in Texas Tech tradition, with more than 20 alumni spanning back to the 1930s. She now steps into a role that not only honors that legacy but also carries influence for future generations.

“The biggest thing that resonates with me is there’s going to be a lot of little girls looking up to me,” Jones said. “A lot of little girls who will want to do this one day.”

Jones becomes the 33rd woman to serve as the Masked Rider and will ride a new horse, “Matador,” as Texas Tech continues its longstanding tradition.

Houston Christian celebrates Sofie’s accomplishment as a reflection of her dedication, character, and passion, and looks forward to watching her represent Texas Tech in this historic role.

  • Physics Students Launch Trebuchets and Defend the Science Behind Them

Students in Mr. Bergmann’s physics class recently stepped back into the Middle Ages to study a classic siege engine, the trebuchet. While the visible objective was to launch a tennis ball toward a 20-yard target, the true purpose of the project went far deeper than distance or accuracy.

Working in teams, students were tasked with designing and constructing a functional trebuchet. However, the build was only one component of a comprehensive physics investigation. Each team analyzed the mechanics of its launch by applying Newton’s Laws of Motion, principles of kinematics, and the law of conservation of energy.

Students developed mathematical models to predict projectile motion, calculated forces acting on their systems, and evaluated how engineering decisions impacted performance. Variables such as arm length, counterweight mass, and release angle were chosen through careful reasoning and calculation.
The culminating experience was an individual “Physics Defense.” In one-on-one interviews, each student walked through the mathematical modeling and engineering logic that governed their specific design. They were expected to clearly articulate how physics principles shaped every aspect of their trebuchet’s performance.

In this course, success is not defined simply by how far the tennis ball travels. Instead, it is measured by how thoroughly each student understands the forces, motion, and energy transformations that make the launch possible. Through this hands-on project, students experienced physics not just as theory, but as something they could build, test, and defend with confidence.

Trevor’s achievement reflects not only his exceptional talent in oil painting but also his dedication, discipline, and artistic vision. The entire community celebrates this remarkable accomplishment.
  • When Linear Regression Takes Flight: DSP 9 Students Put Statistics to the Test

Linear regression came to life in DSP 9 this week as students transformed statistical modeling into a hands-on engineering challenge. Under the guidance of Mr. Copeland, their trusted DSP advisor, students were tasked with predicting how many rubber bands would allow a water balloon dropped from the football bleachers to fall within one meter of the ground without hitting it.

Armed with data, formulas, and careful calculations, students built models, tested hypotheses, and refined their predictions. The results were as exciting as they were instructive. Some balloons burst on impact, others missed the target by mere inches, and one group calculated the drop with perfect precision.

Beyond the thrill of the experiment, the activity reinforced a deeper purpose within the DSP curriculum. Experiences like this are part of a larger, intentional approach to teaching statistics, one that begins in freshman year and builds in complexity over time. Students learn to interpret data, evaluate methodology, and engage in research with confidence, laying a foundation that supports literature reviews in the coming years and prepares them for the advanced statistical reasoning required for original senior research.

By turning abstract concepts into tangible experiences, DSP empowers students to see the real-world applications of their learning and proves that sometimes, the best way to understand statistics is to let it fly.
