A Note Before Summer from HoS

Dear Houston Christian Community, 

I want to take a moment and close out this semester with a brief message to you.

Today I am deeply saddened by recent tragedies, deaths and violence across our nation. The death of George Floyd has raised distrust and fear between the most vulnerable and those sworn to protect them. My prayers and condolences go to his family and friends, and my grief extends to everyone who has been forced to endure the viciousness of racism. Judgement and degradation based upon skin color erodes the value and integrity of our entire culture. Likewise, responding as some have with willful acts of violence and destruction also undermines the very principle we are called to follow, that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  

It is imperative we instill in our students a respect and value for human life. As the challenges of today often shape the perspectives of tomorrow, we believe Houston Christian is a community that can influence a new generation of leaders through thoughtful discourse and ethical decision making for truth and justice. I look forward to further reflection and dialogue on these issues. Houston also offers us a unique opportunity, as one of the most diverse cities in the country, to take that next step and move these ideals beyond words into action. 

In closing, I pray your summer is restful and refreshing. Our administrators will work through the summer, monitoring upcoming state and local guidelines for schools in the fall. We are currently working on a plan to fully return to campus. As conditions become clearer in late July, we will provide you with further information on any new protocols related to health and safety, teaching and learning, co-curricular after-school activities and general campus operations that could be implemented in the new school year. Our goal is to prepare for possible adjustments but normalize school services and activities as much as possible.
