Distinguished Scholars Program

The Houston Christian (HC) Distinguished Scholars Program (DSP) offers gifted students the opportunity to study in an interdisciplinary environment comprised of a rigorous thought and research.

DSP sparks innovative and fresh thinking as Scholars analyze and develop arguments on a variety of topics pertinent to the world today. From this thought process, the Distinguished Scholar develops skills to understand and produce an empirical product on a topic of the Scholar’s choosing prior to their graduation.

Scholars also realize their potential as well rounded leaders and contributors who impact our campus and local community. Scholars improve their public speaking and communication skills through the use of the most advanced technological aids as discover new information and challenge entrenched ideas.

Through academic study and guidance, Distinguished Scholars:
  • Develop analytical thought

  • Dissect philosophical and ethical perspectives

  • Debate current and cultural events within a Biblical perspective

  • Learn APA format and research skills

  • Gather and analyze data for quantitative and qualitative research

  • Improve public speaking and communication skills

  • Produce and present an empirical research document.

Additional Benefits:

  • Visits to a specific geographical area of universities & colleges

  • Field trips

  • Fun N Fellowship

  • Lectures from Guest Speaker

  • Community Service at our adoptive charity: LifeHouse of Houston

DSP is an avenue for Scholars to gain “Radical Amazement” where they discover, develop, and strengthen the gifts, which God has given them as they engage in critical thinking, research, and public speaking skills. Because of the nature of this distinctive program, an additional investment is required.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.       Proverbs 1:7, NIV

“The Distinguished Scholars Program has helped me to succeed in a demanding university environment.  The Program is a nurturing and challenging experience where I was able to create lasting friendships in a diverse, small group setting. I was able to gain confidence in public speaking allowing me to excel in many honors and extra-curricular activities.  Many times my peers have come to me for help with their papers, always asking how I know so much.  One of the greatest benefits of DSP was how it taught me to manage a heavy courseload along with extracurricular activities.  From dining etiquette to learning how to mingle, DSP has indeed helped me in all areas of life.  I highly recommend it for a highly motivated and talented incoming freshman. “

Update – As a freshman, Erica’s DSP experience enabled her to work with an upper level Math Research project and her work on Multiple Linear Regression Models to Predict Typhoons is under review for publishing.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what a fabulous impact the DSP program has had on my children. I know many, many times my son complained about his work load in the DSP program, especially as "senioritis" set-in during his final year.  However, the skills he learned in research, writing, and presentations has been invaluable. When professors assigned “short” 10 page papers, his friends were stressed, but Jack calmly took it in stride.  After writing large, in-depth papers for DSP, anything less was very easy. He proudly proclaimed he would do it all over again because of the advantages it gave him.

I am so happy my daughter has also been able to participate in the program, as I truly believe the skills learned as a Scholar provide a great advantage when entering the challenging college environment.  Because of the focus on responsibility, perseverance, and above all creativity, my children have been able to succeed where others struggle.  The Distinguished Scholars Program creates an inquisitive nature and an ability to think outside the box – all great skills for a path to future success.

Thank you for all your hard work with the scholars,
